'20     "7 rulers variations of 50cm - 7 cetvel 50cm varyasyonları" / Rotterdam-2020, Ink on Wood

These 7 rulers are handmade. Although the areas they cover in space are all 50cm, each one measures differently. The distance between each millimeter is random, which makes the rulers unequal. If measured with "standard" units of measurement, the resulting lengths are: 54,3-46,3-41,1-52.3-49-61-52,9cm⠀

I hung these rulers on the streets, hoping that people would use them. As a tactic I problematize any authority that standardizes our existence; with the aim to open up a space to breathe.⠀

 

I think the standards which are made for us without our knowledge and which we are forced to internalize; bring conflict rather than order. I believe the way of healing is through bringing forth various dimensions, encountering one's own differences and exchanging those with others. Not by standardizing the differences which ultimately prevents us from breathing. 

 

I hope these rulers have been adopted, mediated their owners to produce their own measures, and that those unmatched dimensions will come across each other.

This series developed from the experience I had in Finland in 2016. In "Trace of Ii" I placed 49 A5 papers in various spots for 2months to understand the forming effects of nature and people on a blank surface. https://www.muratyildiz.net/trace-of-ii

Bu 7 cetvel el yapımı. Kapladıkları alan benzer gözükse de, her biri farklı ölçülerde. Her bir milimetre arasındaki mesafe rastgele, o yüzden cetveller eşit değil. “Standart” ölçü birimi ile ölçülürlerse hepsi 50cm çıkar. Ancak ortaya çıkan uzunluklar şunlar: 65,3-78,5-91,1-70,2-72,4-81,4-67cm⠀

Bu cetvelleri sokaklara astım ve insanların alıp kullanmasını umuyorum. Bir taktik olarak varoluşumuzu standardize eden her türlü otoriteyi sorunsallaştırmak ve nefes almaya katkı sağlamak istiyorum.

Bize sorulmadan bizim için üretilmiş, özümsetilmiş standartların, düzen getirmenin aksine insanlığı sürekli çatışmaya sürüklediğini düşünüyorum. Bizi iyileştirecek olanın farklı ölçüleri yüzeye çıkarmaktan, farklılığımızla tanışmaktan ve farklılıkları tanıştırmaktan geçtiğine inanıyorum. Farklılıkları standardize ederek nefes almalarını engellemekten değil. Umarım bu cetveller sahiplerini bulur, bilfiil kullanılır, başka cetvellerin üretilmesine aracı olur ve benzemez ölçüler birbirleriyle karşılaşır.
